Neuromodulators:
BOTOX® & Dysport®
Take care of fine lines and wrinkles, and take years off of your appearance.
BOTOX® is a naturally occurring protein which relaxes the muscles into which it is injected, softening lines and wrinkles for months at a time. BOTOX® is a safe and effective product which has been used in medicine for many years. It is typically used to reduce angry expression of the frown lines and to soften crows feet, but has many other applications including eyebrow shaping and the reduction of lip lines.
BOTOX® for Fine Lines and Wrinkles
BOTOX® is the first naturally occurring protein which relaxes the muscles into which it is injected, softening lines and wrinkles for months at a time. BOTOX® is a safe and effective product which has been used in medicine for many years. It is typically used to reduce angry expression of the frown lines and to soften crows feet, but has many other applications including eyebrow shaping and the reduction of lip lines.
BOTOX® is injected directly into the muscles in target areas. It works by blocking the transmission of nerve impulses to the injected muscles; this reduces the activity of the muscles that cause those persistent lines to form. The treatment is usually done in about 10 minutes, and no recovery time is needed. Within days, you may see an improvement that can last up to 4 months.
Treat expression lines with Dysport®
Like BOTOX®, Dysport® is a botulinum toxin injection, which means that it relaxes the muscles to create a natural and smoothing effect on wrinkles and fine lines. And just like BOTOX®, Dysport® is one of the most widely administered prescription cosmetic injectables for softening severe frown lines between the eyebrows without changing the look or movement of the rest of the face. While both treatments contain a similar main active ingredient, trace protein amounts can vary. This can make one treatment more effective than another for some people. Dysport® is manufactured by Galderma.
Treat Hyperhidrosis with BOTOX®
BOTOX® is a neurotoxin treatment that helps control the symptoms of severe underarm sweating when topical medicines do not work well enough by temporarily blocking the chemical signals from the nerves that stimulate the sweat glands. When the sweat glands don’t receive chemical signals, the severe sweating stops. BOTOX® injections are expected to temporarily stop the production of excessive sweat in the treated area only. Sweat continues to be produced elsewhere.
Where does the sweat go?
BOTOX® injections target the sweat glands in specific areas experiencing excessive sweating. The botulinum toxin in BOTOX® blocks the nerve signals that stimulate these sweat glands, effectively stopping them from producing sweat. Since BOTOX® only affects the localized sweat glands where it is injected, the sweat production in other parts of the body remains unaffected.
BOTOX® for Chronic Migraines
BOTOX® is approved only for Chronic Migraine. Chronic migraine is the most severe form of migraine. 1 to 2% of the population suffers from chronic migraine. These people have more than 15 days of headaches a month for at least three months, 8 or more of which are migraines. The other days can be tension type, as the severity of headache varies in Chronic Migraine.
Unfortunately, BOTOX® does not work for people who have a less severe form of migraine called episodic migraine. Studies on people with episodic migraine were negative.
Nerves communicate by releasing molecules to their targets: the muscles, the sweat glands but also the sensory organs of the skin. The molecules released bind to receptors and induce actions: muscle contraction, sweat production, sensory modulation. BOTOX® prevents nerves from communicating with their targets. If the target is a muscle, it will stop contracting. If the target is a sweat gland, it will stop producing sweat!
In chronic migraine, we know now that sensory nerves become inflamed and hypersensitive. The inflammation is caused by different molecules that may be released by the sensory nerves. BOTOX® blocks this, and that has a calming effect on the pain. There are studies done on animals showing that BOTOX® modifies the electric activity of the pain network of the face and neck. An effect on muscle contraction may also play a role but is not thought to be the key mechanism for migraine.
In summary, BOTOX® alleviates Chronic Migraine primarily by affecting sensory nerves that modulate pain.
